Extracting current-induced spins: spin boundary conditions at narrow Hall contacts
نویسندگان
چکیده
We consider the possibility to extract spins that are generated by an electric current in a two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba–Dresselhaus spin–orbit interaction (R2DEG) in the Hall geometry. To this end, we discuss boundary conditions for the spin accumulations between a spin–orbit (SO) coupled region and a contact without SO coupling, i.e. a normal two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). We demonstrate that in contrast to contacts that extend along the whole sample, a spin accumulation can diffuse into the normal region through finite contacts and be detected by e.g. ferromagnets. For an impedancematched narrow contact the spin accumulation in the 2DEG is equal to the current induced spin accumulation in the bulk of R2DEG up to a geometrydependent numerical factor. 3 Author to whom any correspondence should be addressed. Detection of current-induced spins by ferromagnetic contacts.
Detection of current-induced spin accumulation via ferromagnetic contacts is discussed. Onsager's relations forbid that in a two-probe configuration, spins excited by currents in time-reversal symmetric systems can be detected by switching the magnetization of a ferromangetic detector contact. Nevertheless, current-induced spins can be transferred as a torque to a contact magnetization and can ...
متن کاملCurrent-induced polarization and the spin Hall effect at room temperature.
Electrically induced electron spin polarization is imaged in n-type ZnSe epilayers using Kerr rotation spectroscopy. Despite no evidence for an electrically induced internal magnetic field, current-induced in-plane spin polarization is observed with characteristic spin lifetimes that decrease with doping density. The spin Hall effect is also observed, indicated by an electrically induced out-of...
متن کاملSpin chirality induced skew scattering and anomalous Hall effect in chiral magnets
Noncoplanar magnetic orders in magnetic metals give rise to an anomalous Hall effect of unconventional origin, which, by the spin Berry phase effect, is known as the topological Hall effect. This effect is pronounced in the low-temperature limit, where the fluctuation of spins is suppressed. In contrast, we here discuss that the fluctuating but locally correlated spins close to the phase bounda...
متن کاملNonlocal spin Hall effect and spin-orbit interaction in nonmagnetic metals
Spin Hall effect in a nonlocal spin-injection device is theoretically studied. Using a nonlocal spin-injection technique, a pure spin current is created in a nonmagnetic metal (N). The spin current flowing in N is deflected by spin-orbit scattering to induce the Hall current in the transverse direction and accumulate charge at the edges of N, yielding the spin-current induced Hall effect. We pr...
متن کاملTheory of spin-Hall transport of heavy holes in semiconductor quantum wells
Based on a proper definition of the spin current, we investigate the spin-Hall effect of heavy holes in narrow quantum wells in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling by using a spin-density matrix approach. In contrast to previous results obtained on the basis of the conventional definition of the spin current, we arrive at the conclusion that an electric-field-induced steady-state spin-Ha...
